How to style a scarf — six easy, everyday ways

Silk squares, cotton crinkle, and long fringe — worn over linen, denim, and sundresses all summer long.

The square silk neck knot

Fold a square silk scarf into a triangle, then keep folding into a long band about two inches wide. Wrap once around the neck and tie a small square knot at the side — never dead center. This is the one you reach for over a linen tee, a denim jacket, or a plain white sundress.

Try it with our Floral Print Silky Satin Square or the Houndstooth Pleated Square — both fold cleanly and hold a knot without slipping.

The hair scarf

Fold a square scarf into a two-inch band, lay it across the top of your head, and tie a small knot at the nape under your hair. The tails tuck under and disappear. It's the fastest way to make a second-day ponytail look intentional.

For a headband version, tie the knot on top instead — a small bow if you want playful, a flat knot if you want quiet.

On the handbag handle

A folded silk square tied to a tote or crossbody handle is the single easiest way to make a plain bag feel styled. Fold into a narrow band, loop once around the handle, and tie a small double knot with short tails.

This is where a tiger print or ombre rope-fringe scarf earns its keep — the color reads even from across a room.

The infinity loop

Drape a long infinity or crinkle scarf around the neck once, then twist and loop again for a soft double layer at the collarbone. Keep the fabric a little loose — a scarf that's yanked tight looks bothered.

Our Net Infinity Scarf (set of two) is built for exactly this — light enough for July evenings on the porch, structured enough to hold the loop.

As a belt

Fold a long crinkle or fringe scarf into a two-inch band and thread it through the belt loops of denim or linen trousers. Tie a small knot at the side hip, tails down. Instant color at the waist without a single new hardware piece.

Ombre and tassel scarves work best here — the fringe catches at the knot and looks intentional.

The shoulder drape

For cool restaurants and breezy porches — drape a long oblong scarf around the shoulders like a shawl, let the ends fall long in the front. No knot, no fuss. A slim leather belt cinched over the top turns it into a whole outfit.

This is where a lightweight tassel scarf earns its keep — enough weight to stay put, light enough to not overwhelm a summer dress.

Frequently asked

What size scarf is best for beginners?
A 35-inch silk square is the most versatile — it ties as a neckerchief, hair scarf, or handbag accent, and folds small enough to travel. Longer oblong scarves (50–70 inches) come next; they're best for shoulder drapes, belts, and infinity loops.
How do I keep a silk scarf knot from slipping?
Fold the scarf into a narrower band before tying — the extra friction holds. For silk-on-silk situations (a scarf over a silk top), a tiny bead of fabric-safe styling wax on the knot keeps it in place all day.
Can you wear scarves in summer?
Yes — the trick is fabric weight. Silk squares, cotton crinkle, and net weaves stay cool at the neck and add color without adding heat. Save wool and heavy knits for fall.
